The World’s 5 Creepiest Places

Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh, Scotland

For years the hidden underground closes of Mary King’s Close, in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland, have been shrouded in myths and mysteries. Tales of ghosts and murders, and myths of plague victims being walled up and left to die abounded.

The Real Mary King’s Close consists of a number of closes which were originally narrow streets with houses on either side, stretching up to seven storeys high. In 1753, the Burgh Council decided to develop a new building on this site, the Royal Exchange (now the City Chambers). The houses at the top of the closes were knocked down and part of the lower sections were kept and used as the foundations for the Royal Exchange. The remnants of the closes were left beneath the building, dark and ancient dwellings steeped in mystery.

Following research into new documentary and archaeological evidence uncovered by Continuum, for the first time the real lives of some of the people who lived here have been traced and their stories can now be told. At The Real Mary King’s Close you will see an historically accurate interpretation of life in Edinburgh from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It’s a popular tourist attraction complete with a gift shop for buying t-shirts and postcards.

Chernobyl, Pripyat, Ukraine

Prypiat (Ukrainian: При́п’ять, Pryp”jat’; Russian: При́пять, Pripjat’), or Pripyat, is an abandoned city in the zone of alienation in northern Ukraine, Kiev Oblast, near the border with Belarus. The city was founded in 1970 to house the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers, and was abandoned in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster. Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident.

It is difficult to accurately quantify the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. It is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history and the only level 7 instance on the International Nuclear Event Scale. It resulted in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion which destroyed the reactor.

Paris Catacombs, Paris, France

Underground stone quarries that hold the 200-year-old skeletons of several million people.

The Catacombs of Paris or Catacombes de Paris are a famous underground ossuary in Paris, France. Its entrance is located near the Denfert-Rochereau station of the Paris Métro. Organized in a renovated section of the city’s vast network of subterranean tunnels and caverns towards the end of the 18th century, it became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century and has been open to the public on a regular basis from 1867. The official name for the catacombs is l’Ossuaire Municipal.

Bones and skulls are stacked on either side of a narrow corridor like merchandise at a warehouse—a lot of merchandise. The air is close and cool, with just a hint of decomposition, and there’s rude graffiti dating from the French Revolution, mainly about the king and the feeble nobility.

Manchac Swamp, Louisiana

The Manchac Swamp, a.k.a. the “haunted swamp,” near New Orleans is a Southern Gothic fan’s dream. An imprisoned voodoo queen is said to have cast a curse on these watery surroundings around the turn of the last century, resulting in the disappearance of three hamlets in a hurricane in 1915.

This swamp is a wilderness jewel. Sims’s photographs and John Kemp’s text have made timeless the people and place of Manchac Swamp.

The Manchac Swamp Bridge is a bridge in the US state of Louisiana. With a total length of 22.80 miles (36.69 km) it is the third longest bridge in the world by total length (see List of bridges by length). The bridge carries Interstate 55 over the Manchac Swamp in Louisiana, and represents one-third of the highway’s approximately 66 miles in Louisiana.

Bran Castle, Bran, Romania

Bran Castle situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Braşov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, on DN73. Commonly known as “Dracula’s Castle” (although it is one among several locations linked to the Dracula legend, including Poienari Castle and Hunyad Castle), it is marketed as the home of the titular character in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Also can be find at Dog Central place…

In 1897 Bram Stoker wrote a terrifying story about Count Dracula. A century after, there are still people who believe in it. Even researchers are trying to find out the truth about Dracula. All are trying to clear the mystery: was there or wasn’t there a vampire in Transylvania? How many of these fabulous stories are legends and how many say the truth ? Here is the legend about Dracula.

His castle is supposed to be Bran’s Castle since its narrow corridors constitute a mysterious labyrinth of ghostly nooks and secret chambers easy to hide a “vampire”.

  6. Ldt says:

Similar to the catacombs in Paris, I have seen a church in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic, decorated in tens of thousands of skeletons. It’s extremely eerie.

I visited Bran’s Castle last year. Biggest let down ever. We were on a guided tour and they said that there was a huge possibility Vlad never stayed there. It’s pretty much a museum for Queen Marie who used to stay there. The only vampire related thing you will find are the tons of stalls at the base of the hill selling dracula merchandise. Definitely not creepy.

I consider the Catacombes of Palermo (Sicily) much creepier than the ones in Paris. Hundreds of DRESSED MUMMIES hanging from the wall. It’s like Michael Jackson’s Thriller came alive.

  13. Whaargarbl says:

Sedlec Ossuary wins. Too bad it didn’t make the original article.

  14. Susan says:

I’ve been to Bran Castle and its not scary whatsoever. We were told its one of many castles that Vlad Tepes may have stayed in. Compared to the rest of the castles in Europe, Its small and feels more utilitarian than anything. I’m wondering if the author actually went there.

  15. chuckyy says:

I visited the Bran castle in 2006. It’s true it wasn’t that creepy at all, to see it in a clear daylight.

We drove all over Transilvinia for 3 days and let me tell you, those tiny villages, during the dark are creepy as hell. Altough in EU already, the majority of the transportation in Romanian streets are still horses, can you believe it! Only thing that was missing was howling of the wolf. Great trip, though :)

  16. Brad says:

I think that you forgot North Korea. I have seen pictures it is scary.

  20. The catacombs in Paris are really scary

  21. Roman says:

chuckyy may be the stupidest guy i ever saw on the web. Transilvania is a place like any other with CARS and TRAINS and every meens of transportation available world wide. The only thing you neeed to do is search the web. I can’t belive that people still think the way this guy thinks

  22. bad chuckyy says:

chuckyy, that is so not true what you say about the transportation in Romania. I don’t know where you have been, but I live here, and we are as civilized as any other european country. I am sorry that you say that, because you and I both know, that down hill, in the parking space there was full of CARS!!

  23. Really people? says:

Really people? You guys expected Bran’s Castle to be scary?
Does anyone actually research the places that they are going to visit?
Vlad, while he may have done some horrific things (by our standards) is actually considered a hero in Wallachia. He is created with helping keep the Turks from taking over all of Eastern Europe. He only did the things he did to traitors and his enemies.
And for who ever the author is, Dracula, while he is named after Vlad, isn’t really about Vlad. Most historians do not know why Vlad was used as a model for Dracula; Dracula is more closely related to Countess Elizabeth Bathory.

I definitely went to scary pubs in Europe than some of these places, including Bran’s Castle.

  24. Mike says:

That Chernobyle place looks eerily familiar to a level in Call of Duty 4… lol

  26. Nancy says:

Bran’s Castle is for sale, you can buy it for the sum of 40 million usd. There is no heat and its falling apart but if you own it, you can make it as scary as you like.

  29. kendra says:

What made bran’s castle creepy is the legend and history behind Vlad..Also known as vlad the impaler. He was said to punish the evil and wicked but with such cruelty.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_III_Dracula

one example is the execution of a unfaithful wife The woman’s breasts were cut off, then she was skinned and impaled in a square in Târgovişte with her skin lying on a nearby table.

Whether people thought he was a holy man or not does not excuse him for torchering people.

Oh and Mike that level of cod 4 is Pripyat

  30. Vlad was Bad (haha rhyme) says:

Ok to the guy (or girl) “Really people”, nothing against you, but Vlad was a very terrible person, he didn’t just do those things to his enemies. he once let the poor and sick into his castle for a banquet, locked them in, and burned down the dining hall. he was a big fat meanie.

  32. Sam Cornwell says:

Try looking up the crypt under Winchester cathedral. That place sure is spooky

  33. Nyteshade says:

Vlad was probably twisted in ways you cannot even imagine.
Getting sold into sexual slavery as a very young child by his father could have produced some interesting results. In his place among bloodthirsty leaders, he we no more cruel, just very creative.

  34. Pez says:

You should see ‘La isla de las muñecas’ (doll’s island) in Mexico. I’ve never been there, but looks really creepy. I hope once I go to some of these places :).

  35. scott hughes says:

gernsey war tunnels :| scariest place ever. not been touched since the nazis left it , was built by jew slaves alot of them died in their and it was a hospital full with surgery room…. pretty scary place.

  36. Shelley Hobbs says:

Scott I agree with you. Gibraltar WWII tunnels - 30 odd miles of tunnels inside the rock complete with a miliatry hospital. Links to part of the 18th century tunnels where thousands of men died during the Sieges. Friend of mine did a sponsored sleepover in there on Halloween and still won’t talk about it….Proper scary!

  37. paul says:

is chernobyl the same as in cal of duty 4 modern warfare?? seem very similar with the wheel

  38. MM says:

Ok, boils and ghouls, I certainly see a pattern here! None of you went to school or if you did, that school really sucked at history! Let me tell you some basic history facts: 1. Vlad Tepes NEVER stayed at Bran; 2. Vlad Tepes was nick-named Dracula because he was in the Order Of The Dragon and the paysants didn’t know what that the symbol he was wearing was. His father was also nick-named Dracul(in romanian there is a slight difference between Draculea and Dracul, Draculea might mean as being “the son of Dracul”, and Dracul meaning “the Devil”); 3. Dracula - Erszebeth Bathory? Are you fuckin kidding me?; 4. Vlad burning the poor? Where the hell did you learn history? You have no idea on the real history! If it’s that hard, you can learn the basics on wiki ffs! 5. The Bran Castle was auctioned but you still couldn’t do everything you wanted with it! You still had to invest money in it but keep it as a museum; 6. sexual slavery? FFS, where were you born and why? Trading the hers was a common thing between empires for intellectual reasons. Vlad learned the impaling stuff from the turks btw and he impaled them just as he learned it from them.
Vlad Tepes is a great hero of Romania, especially to the Wallachian region(not Transylvania), he defended his country and he died for his country. He wasn’t a vampire and he didn’t do any harm to the poor. Learn history or shut up!

  39. Spiegal says:

Yes, the CoD 4 level was made in reference to the Chernobyl incident.

I think it would be creepy as hell to go walk through a modern day ghost town, such as Chernobyl.

  40. The photograph, or trick photograph, in the 2leep.com website I’m most fascinated with is the one of the human-faced dog. I wonder how it was done?

Anyway, I am featured on the BBC website and anxious to bring my weblinks to everyone’s attention. Simply visit Google and search the web for Jeremy Keller, or Jeremy Keller BBC, to access the details.

  41. Suzan says:

Really, Manchac? I grew up in New Orleans and crossed Manchac Pass zillions of times going to college. It’s beautiful and perhaps even haunting in a way but scary? No way!

  42. S says:

First of all….I love you MM…Thank you.
Second of all…People, do you relly believe in Dracula? I really wish I was Bram Stalker (do you even know who he is?) right now because I see that, that novel sold many copies to people that actually believe in vampires. So Vlad Tepes was know for his cruelty. So? Why wasn’t Hitler called a vampire? Or Saddam or even Bush? Although compared to these people, Vlad was cruel beacuse he believed in what was right and good not having any interests. He never burned the poor, he didn;t sleep in a coffin, and he never drank blood.
And third of all, fuck you chuckky!!!

  47. D says:

I’ve been to Bran several times, as I have family in Romania. It is actually a beautiful castle and quite well built for its purpose: to guard the passes to Brasov. The stairs to the upper levels are a bit creepy, but their design is to keep invaders going up one at a time, giving many strategic benefits to the defender.

Vlad has almost no ties to this place, but it is very much worth visiting.

As for most Romanians using horse carts, this is utter crap. Mostly gypsies and some farmers use horse carts for specific purposes, but a vast majority of Romanians use either cars or public transportation. That statement may have been true before the fall of communism, but hasn’t been true for decades.

While at Bran, make certain to visit Brasov and Risnov fortress. Also an easy drive to Sighisoara, which is where Vlad Tepes was born. A beautiful city with a lot of charm.
