One hour of heavy petting is really Bizarre Stuff
I went to a cat cafe in Osaka yesterday. Although, describing it as a “cafe” is somewhat misleading. It’s more of a cat brothel than a cat cafe.
It’s hidden inside a nondescript office building. An elevator discreetly whisks you up to the third floor. The elevator opens into a small hallway where you must remove your shoes and put on a pair of slippers.
You then open a sliding door to enter the cafe but before you can go any further, you are instructed to hold out your hands, palms up, while an employee sprays them with disinfectant.
You are then directed to the counter to pay in advance. Six hundred yen (about $5) gets you all the cats you can stroke for an hour. A few hundred yen extra gets you a drink to quench your thirst after all of the heavy petting is over.
After you have removed your shoes, sterilized your hands and paid your money, it’s time to get down on your knees and play with the cat of your choice. Look in all this Weird News

The cafe is called Neko no Jikan 猫の時間 (or “Cat Time” in English). The 20 cats that work here have free range of the place, sitting and sleeping wherever they like.
The cafe consists of two large rooms. There is the cafe area, which is exactly what it sounds like. There are couches and small tables where you can sip a cup of coffee while a cat sleeps on your lap or at your feet. It is a cozy space with soft lighting and classical music playing quietly in the background.
The other room, attached to the cafe, is best described as a cat playroom. No drinks are allowed in this room. You can play with the cats or just sit on one of the many couches and watch all of the four-legged loving go down.
The cafe was busy but not crowded. The vast majority of customers were women. There were a few men but they had all come on the arms of their girlfriends. The most enthusiastic customer was a middle-aged man with a 1950s rock-and-roll pompadour. He made a point of talking to all of the cats, clucking and cooing over their every move.
“Oh look at you! You sure like to sleep don’t you? Oh, yes you do. Yes you do. You cute little sleeper you.”
(I am translating this from Japanese so that might not be exactly what he said but the meaning behind his words was clear.)
Of course, cats being cats, it was somewhat difficult to seduce them into spending time with you. They would sit in your lap for about a minute before squirming out of your embrace.
If you wanted a cat to play with you, you were better off buying some tuna from the cafe in order to lure them in. These ladies bought some tuna and they were instantly the most popular people in the room.
The woman with the pink cell phone on her lap could tell I was feeling a bit left out so she handed me a piece of her tuna. As soon as I started waving the tuna around, I had no shortage of cats wanting to sit on my lap. But once the tuna was gone, so were they.
Everyone was pouring out love to these cats but the cats weren’t giving much back. Cats do not love stupidly and blindly like dogs. Cats can be affectionate and playful but they are also independent and solitary (or stubborn and uncooperative, depending on your viewpoint). I was happy enough just to be near them.
I had never heard of cat cafes before coming to Japan and I’m surprised the trend hasn’t caught on in the rest of the world. Cat cafes are a great idea, especially for people whose landlords won’t allow pets in their buildings. Or for people who can’t have a cat because they live with an allergic partner. Also you can check New Movies about cats
It’s a brilliant concept. If I can find a cat cafe in Kyoto, I’m going to go at least once a month.
awwww kawaiiiiiiiii =^_^=
The staff there told me they are planning to open a cat cafe
near the JR Kyoto Station.
There’s another cat cafe near the Takatsuki City Hankyu line Station (between Osaka and Kyoto) it’s called 甘えんぼ www.nekonoheya-amaenbou.com
Aha, that’s adorable. Was nice of the lady to give you some Tuna though!
I love it. I would definitely go if they had one locally. There would be a problem with the health code here in the states, but you probably could get around it if you served canned drinks… Maybe.
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. What kind of weak minded individual is actually entertained by a waste of time and money like this?
Some parts of this article seem to be written by a child! “Cats do not love stupidly and blindly like dogs”. What kind of asanine observation is that!? Hopefully this bullshit will never come to the United States. We have enough problems to worry about in the U.S., people don’t need to be wasting their time and money at such a nonsense establishment as the one described in the article.
My kitty just passed away from a blod clot/ stroke
and she looks like one of the kitties in the picture.
id love to goto a cat cafe!
mmmmeeeeeeoooow
[...] for Cyn for the link to this Osaka cat cafe. *ahem* I’m sure some of us you could run one of these from [...]
Cute Cate i like it.
Oh isn’t that a perfectly quaint idea.
The cat-lover in me likes this very much.
I think it’s a pretty neat idea having a cat restaurant especially some of us have an astrological sign as leo.
I really amused never would have thought about it in a milion years.

JOHN WAYNE ?!?
Is that really you? …well shucks,
i thought you were dead.
please try not leave that thoughtless judgemental
short sighted blissfully ignorant side of you unattended.
in fact trying is too late.. just hush now
the pain will subside
Great work! I also have my own blog I just find it hard to write quality content like this.
I guess I really don’t have the time.
We live in Portland, Oregon, USA. Some of the cat shelters in town (Animal Aid in SW Portland, for one) have lots of cats that need attention. Volunteer for one hour a month or as much as your schedule will allow. They roam free in several rooms of a house. Yes, some of them are grouchy, but others are so starved for love that they will spend an hour with you.(I know some humans that are grouchy, too…) Long haired cats need brushing, kittens need feather toys waved, etc.

I just read an article about places like this. You can also, in some places, rent pets daily, weekly or monthly. Dogs are the most popular, but you can also get pretty much anything from cats to ferrets.
What a lovely idea for people who cannot have pets for whatever reason. I am owned by 2 cats and fully understand the difference between love from a cat and love from a dog.
OMG HOW CUTE!!!! catz r mah animal since like forever!!! lol this is so cute!
[...] es un Café para gatos en Osaka, [...]
What a great Idea!!! We could do it here in the states, Heck there are many people man and woman, (john wayne if that is not you given name you are an insult to the man ) who woudllove to hold a cat.. Cats are great for people they do love and purr . but hey don’t purr for people like john wayne, So sorry you have so much anger in our llife..
sugoi kawai!!!
this is a dumb idea i agree with john w.. cats are dumb animals and we in the us dont need any cat petting place if you want to pet a cat so bad go to the pound and pick one up or if u cant have one go to your local crazy lady who owns a million of them and pet one
I don’t know if I like the idea of having to pay for petting cats. Adorable cats though
John Wayne & Gorg
It is mean to say that cats are dumb animals because they certainly are not. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean everybody else doesnt.
It is true that cats don’t love blindly like dogs. Dogs love attention while cats are more independent. They will go to you if they want to be petted.
I think this Cat Cafe is a brilliant idea. I hope it comes to singapore as well.

aaaawwwww that’s adorable
Why go to a Cat Cafe?
Why not go down to your local cat shelter, SPCA, RSPCA etc and help out. It doesn’t cost you anything and you get to spend time with animals, help the sick ones and best of all, see the happy faces of children and adults alike as they take a new pet home.
Of course, if a Cat Cafe is the only thing going, it’s better than nothing.
I miss working at the SPCA though, I used to go and help out with the dogs. Great fun.
OMG! It’s a cat cathouse! Not that there’s anything wrong with that. And they all look like lovely, wellbred young cats from good families.
SPCA and pounds are all awesome places, but I agree with the concept of going to one of these places if you can’t have a cat, like in an apartment or college or whatever. But let’s say a Cat Cafe teamed up with the pound?
Does this NOT have potential?!
It seems a bit expensive for people who can’t have cats of their own. Isn’t $5 more than it costs to feed or educate a child for a month in many third world countries?
Mmmmmm AS the resident kat from alt.society.nottingham i must say im being hard done by!
NO ONE from this group has ever offered me kat fud! or a nice lap to sit on whilst being offered tuna!
Where do i sign up for this sort of pampering?
All i can say is
Meiowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Nice and cozy to spend a kawaii afternoon getting to know new kitties. Expecially when you seek someone’s else cats affection.
(i know these posts are a bit old but i really felt the need to state my opinions)
to John Wayne & gorg,
The two of you obviously have never spent any time around cats (other than trying to run them over with your car). you sound like “dog people”. How sad that such ignorance exists.
i think the cat cafe idea is great, and like others here have suggested, it would be a great idea if they partnered with animal shelters. not everyone can afford a cat or is allowed to own one, but everyone who is a cat lover should have a chance to be around one even if they have to pay $5. (and go away feeling good that they got to snuggle a kitty AND support an animal shelter.)
As a responsible pet owner/animal lover for over 40 years, (having owned cats, dogs, rats, rabbits, fish, and an iguana), i think i am qualified to state that cats make exellent pets, they are beautiful, sweet, affectionate, intelligent, intuitive, playful, funny, clean, (usually) quiet, inexpensive, healthy, etc. They aren’t anywhere near as needy as dogs, and in most cases you can easily leave them alone for the weekend if you need to go out of town without making special arrangements. There’s a reason cats are so popular, they’ve even inspired many websites such as LOLcats (icanhazcheezburger.com), thingsoncats.com, etc. Cats are the most popular pet in the US, and in many countries around the world. Even if i can’t ever have any other pets i will ALWAYS have a cat.
i have noticed that people who identify themselves as “dog people” and/or don’t like cats tend to be jerks in general and control freaks in particular. What does it say about a person
who prefers to own a pet that needs to be told when and where to take a crap and needs almost the level of care a toddler requires, for life? (NOTE; i like dogs too, i have owned dogs in the past and i am not talking about ALL dog owners, just a certain type of dog owner, those who hate cats and have an attitude that dogs are “better” than cats, “cats are stupid” etc.) at least cats don’t need to be walked and they bury thier “leavings” along the side of the yard if they don’t use a litterbox. The fact that dogs love thier owners unconditionally is not necessarily a good thing. i think “dog people” somehow feel belittled by the fact that usually you have to earn a cats love, and if you beat them they’re not going to forgive you over and over and snuggle up to you.
over the last 40 years i have noticed that “dog people” tend to think like those annoying parents of spoiled rotten bratty kids who think EVERYONE adores thier child as much as they do. They don’t see the reality that not everyone loves thier dog like they do and that most people don’t appreciate a large slobbery animal jumping up on them, barking, crapping in their yard, etc. i don’t have anything against dogs, i just think that if you are going to own one, you need to take the time to train it properly and realize that not everyone likes dogs. i know not everyone likes cats and thats fine, but they should respect those of us who do, and see that cats are great pets too.
i haven’t owned a dog for over 20 years, so it really pisses me off when i have to clean up dog crap from my front yard, or when i have a houseguest stay over and they don’t clean up after thier dog and also think it’s “cute” that thier dog is stealing food off people’s plates, barking at nothing, slobbering on everyone, etc. if someone has a well behaved dog (or at least appologizes if thier dog misbehaves) they are welcome to visit.
im definately partial to cats and think they make the best pets ever, and im hoping that more people will consider opening up cat cafes, and also cafes that cater to other pets such as dogs, rats, etc. in addition to being a great place to get your “fuzz therapy”, it would also be a great way to introduce people to what other pets are like, and increase the adoption rates of unusual pets such as rats. (which also make awesome companions, by the way)
~ love and light ~
I just wanted to say good job on the site! I was cruising on Google when I found your site. After checking out this site I’ve come up with some great ideas for my site. I just thought I’d let you in on it
d’aww, how cute :3 i wish there were cat cafes here in america.
seriously? do people honestly think everyone has the same opinions? some people act like everyone in the country likes dogs, and that we have too many problems for cat cafes to open. if they ever did open around here, it isnt even that hard to restrain yourself from walking inside.(unless you want to make a fool of yourself and complain)
you could be right about this one Ive found a vid about it see for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlSXYwmkmOQ
May be I’d like to drink a cup of coffee with my cat, but I’m sure it does not think the same way, because my cat Tony is very jealous!!!
